Journal on Books Chosen for Research Paper
The first element of our discussion concerned comparing and contrasting each of our books and trying to determine why they were chosen for the science-fiction catergory. Each of our books (Fahrenheit 451, Starship Troopers, and The Left Hand of Darkness)are about futuristic societies. The settings are in the future, yet the novels deal with the issues of our society and the evils of our society. The beliefs of these societies are the exact opposite of the beliefs of our society. In Fahrenheit 451, the firemen's jobs are to burn boods, and television is considered to be essential to everyday life. In Starship Troopers, it is taught that no one should have any values. And in The Left Hand of Darkness, people who are not homosexuals are considered to be abnormal. These views seem unusual, or even wrong, to our culture. But our customs and beliers would seem strange to these fictional societies. The suthours were reflecting on the aspects of our society and analyzing the social justice of our society. The three novels deal with the desire of mankind to equalize the forces of society so that everyone is treated equally and fairly.
In Fahrenheit 451, the novel that I am presently reading, the elements that I plan to concentrate on are theme and conflict. Guy Montague, the main character, seems to be going through many changes. I think that his outlook on the rest of the world will greatly transform over the course of the novel. Possibly this is his maturation process, or maybe he is just going through some major changes in his life. I will also examine the plot of the story for my research paper. It seems to me that the plot will be very anylitical and have a large impact on the characters.
